Public Safety Facility

New Salem Police Facility Project

The Salem Police Department currently occupies 27,000 square feet on the first floor of the Civic Center, which was built in 1972, when the population of Salem was half of what it is today.Salem’s current police facility was not designed to meet the diverse needs of a modern police department nor accommodate growth that has occurred in the last 40 years.
The standards to which Salem’s current police facility was constructed do not meet the current requirements to ensure that public safety operations can continue after some natural disasters, such as an earthquake.Due to lack of space at the Civic Center, several important public safety operations, including the 9-1-1 dispatch center and the crime lab, are currently located off-site in about 21,000 square feet of leased space.
